Daily Business Review: Note the Date: Miami-Dade Circuit Set to Resume Jury Trials

“Jury trials are the cornerstone of our court system, and the public has been waiting patiently to have their day in court,” Miami-Dade Circuit Chief Judge Bertila Soto said.

MIAMI (February 10, 2021) — Stuart Ratzan, partner at Ratzan Weissman & Boldt, is chair of the American Board of Trial Advocates’ Miami-Dade COVID-19 Jury Trial Task Force, which represented attorneys’ interest as the court’s plan came together.

“Recognizing early in the pandemic that jury trials would be significantly impacted or unfeasible for a long duration of time, the American Board of Trial Advocates’ Miami-Dade chapter formed a COVID-19 task force to evaluate the risks involved with in-person courtroom proceedings and create a blueprint for safely resuming trials,” Ratzan said. “Our task force members have held recurring meetings dating back to April of 2020, and we have been in constant communication with a team of medical experts and Miami-Dade’s judicial leadership. We have now finalized a strict set of protocols that will enable jury trials to resume with rigid social distancing measures in place. This return to the courtroom is an important step forward for both the legal industry and our community at large.”
